Gemini Skills Are Coming to Workspace. Your Monthly Report Still Needs a Check
If you run the same spreadsheet report every month, you probably repeat the same instructions: check these sheets, use this date range, flag these exceptions.
Google’s September 30 announcement gives that routine a useful update. Gemini Skills are reusable instructions you can call on inside most Workspace apps and combine in a prompt.
For a monthly report, a skill could hold your definition of revenue, the date field that determines the reporting period, and the checks you want before writing the summary. That saves you from explaining the job again each month.
The prompt can remember its job. The spreadsheet remains free to improvise.
Next month’s file might contain a renamed column, a separate adjustments table, or a new definition of an active customer. Your saved instructions still need to make sense against the file in front of you.
Consider a sales report. Last month, “revenue” meant invoiced sales after returns. This month, the returns arrive on a separate sheet. If the analysis misses that sheet, the total could look convincing while answering a different question.
Before saving a reporting skill, spell out what the result should include. Name the reporting period, the relevant sheets, the metric definitions, and how to handle missing or conflicting records. Ask the tool to flag anything it cannot resolve.
Then make the answer reviewable. Where source references are available, ask for them alongside the finding. A statement such as “revenue fell 8%” becomes more useful when you can inspect the records behind the change and decide what to do next.
For Excel and CSV workbooks, Jolene.pro supports saved analyses you can rerun on the next month’s file, with references to source cells, rows, and sheets. That gives the reviewer a route from the summary back to the records.
There are rollout details to watch. Google says Workspace Rapid Release rollout begins October 5, 2026, followed by Scheduled Release on October 19. The Gemini app rollout begins October 13. Skills created in the Gemini app and Workspace apps will not automatically sync, so choose where your team will maintain its instructions.
Start with one recurring report. Save its instructions, try them against two months of data, and check whether the analysis catches changes in structure and meaning.
The goal is to spend less time explaining the report and more time understanding what changed.
