Materials Haulage and Delays Dataset
Compare haulage costs per tonne and tonne-kilometer across sites.
A practical workbook exercise for site cost accountants and logistics analysts. Work from the underlying records, compare the relevant totals and explain how you reached your result.
About the dataset
This original synthetic dataset contains 648 source records across three related tables. The records are fictional and designed for descriptive business analysis.

What's included
- Sites: 8 records and 3 fields. One operating site.
- Loads: 560 records and 6 fields. One delivered material load.
- Delays: 80 records and 5 fields. One site delay event.
Recommended analysis
- Which sites have the highest haul cost per tonne?
- Does distance explain differences in cost per tonne?
- Which delay reasons consume the most recorded minutes?
- What is the difference between an average load rate and a weighted site rate?
How to work with the data
Use the following relationships to connect the source tables:
- Loads.site_id → Sites.site_id
- Delays.site_id → Sites.site_id
Check the row grain before joining. Aggregate repeated child records to the required level before combining totals, so parent amounts are not counted more than once.
You can explore the workbook in Excel or Jolene.pro, or use the CSV files with SQL, Power BI and other analysis tools.
Definitions and assumptions
- A tonne is a metric tonne. Tonne-km = tonnes × distance_km for each load.
- Delays are site-level logs, not linked to individual loads; do not allocate them to loads without a stated assumption.
Use the field definitions and nullable-column guidance in the included data dictionary. Interpret blank values and reporting dates according to the scenario notes.
