Manufacturing Production and Downtime Dataset
Compare run output, rejects and downtime across bottling lines.
A practical workbook exercise for production planners, plant analysts and cost accountants. Work from the underlying records, compare the relevant totals and explain how you reached your result.
About the dataset
This original synthetic dataset contains 366 source records across three related tables. The records are fictional and designed for descriptive business analysis.

What's included
- Lines: 6 records and 4 fields. One production line.
- Runs: 180 records and 6 fields. One eight-hour production run.
- Downtime: 180 records and 4 fields. One non-overlapping downtime event in a run.
Recommended analysis
- Which downtime causes consume the most time?
- How do reject rates vary by line?
- Which lines have the weakest accepted output per planned hour?
- How does runtime differ from scheduled time?
How to work with the data
Use the following relationships to connect the source tables:
- Runs.line_id → Lines.line_id
- Downtime.run_id → Runs.run_id
Check the row grain before joining. Aggregate repeated child records to the required level before combining totals, so parent amounts are not counted more than once.
You can explore the workbook in Excel or Jolene.pro, or use the CSV files with SQL, Power BI and other analysis tools.
Definitions and assumptions
- One downtime event per run. Downtime is included within planned_minutes and never exceeds it.
- Reject rate = rejects / (good + reject units). Rated speed is nominal; calculate any performance metric from the corresponding runtime denominator.
Use the field definitions and nullable-column guidance in the included data dictionary. Interpret blank values and reporting dates according to the scenario notes.
